Undergraduate Programs:
Bachelor of Arts in Communications Studies:
The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies is a
54 hour program. In addition to the General Education
requirements, all students will complete 24 hours of
CORE requirements designed to provide
a thorough understanding of fundamental communication
processes. The CORE requirements are
structured into four major categories: General
Theory/Skills courses (12 semester hours),
Research Methodology courses (6 semester
hours), Macro-Context courses (3 semester
hours) and Micro-Context courses (3
semester hours). Students must also complete 12-21 hours
of course work in a specific track of study. The tracks
are designed to provide students with the opportunity
to pursue more extensive study in the communication
context most relevant to their professional and social
goals. The five tracks of study are: Health
Communication, Mass Media,
Organizational Communication, Communication
and Public Advocacy, and Public
Relations. All students will also complete 9-18
hours of approved related course work, depending on
the number of credit hours required by their track (Students
choosing the Health Communication or PR track complete
9 hours of related course work). Courses used
to satisfy CORE requirements cannot simultaneously be
used to satisfy track requirements. Courses used to
satisfy related course work requirements cannot simultaneously
be used to satisfy CORE or track requirements. All related
course work must be approved by the student’s assigned
advisor or chosen from the list of pre-approved classes
(see individual track checklists). All students will
satisfy the general education requirements. Students
using languages with the Latin alphabet as their foreign
language must complete 2201.
