Bio:
Mrs. Smith is currently a candidate for a
Ph.D. in Cultural Foundations at UNC-Greensboro.
Her primary interest and research examines the
stereotypical images of blacks in film and television
from the 1900s to the present. She also researches
blacks' treatment in society based upon their
access to formal English language. She teaches
African-American Culture and African-American
history in African American and African Studies
Department. She also serves as adjunct faculty
in the Department of Communication Studies where
she teaches introductory journalism classes
and news editing. Smith was recognized in 1998
and in 2001 as Student Support Services' Professor
of the Year. She is a department adviser and
a member of the Arts and Sciences Faculty Council.
Her master's thesis, The Words Unspoken which
deals with language as power for African-Americans,
is currently in the process of being published
as part of an anthology
