Department of Communication Studies:
The B.A. in Communication Studies offers five tracks of study: Health
Communication, Mass Media,
Organizational Communication, Public
Relations and Public Advocacy.
In addition, students in the Public Relations track
of the major may elect to earn a Certificate
in International Public Relations. At the graduate
level, the department offers an International Exchange
Program in International Public Relations. The department
also seeks to provide students with a variety of extracurricular
and co-curricular experiences. Three organizations are
currently supported through the department. Lambda
Pi Eta is an honorary society that provides further
programs and opportunities to learn about communication.
The Public Relations Student Society
of America (PRSSA), affiliated with the Public Relations
Society of America, provides meetings, workshops, and
events that develop the student’s understanding of the
public relations profession. The
Forensic Team provides students with opportunities
to engage in intercollegiate competitive speech and
debate. The department also has an active internship
program, with undergraduate interns working at many
of the top corporations, agencies, television stations,
and radio stations in the metropolitan area.
The Department of Communication Studies offers several
scholarships and assistantships.
Graduate students enrolled in the Masters program are
eligible to apply for graduate assistantships. Walter
and Rebecca Roberts Scholarships are available to
support the study of non-traditional undergraduate students
enrolled in the B.A. program. The Cy Bahakel Scholarship
is given in support of an outstanding student-athlete
in the Communication Studies program. The
Brycie-Baber Scholarship is awarded in support of
students who evidence academic excellence and who participate
in forensics.
